What's the Value to me of Buying a Country?

BuytheMap after just 12 weeks has recieved 150,000hits, is listed on Alex.com, uses Adwords / Overture, has press releases, and other marketing techniques. With cica 2500hits a day and growing you will benefit from this traffic filtering through to your site. Yes it is a bit of fun, and this is the the first ever website to do this, but buying a country could even be an investment as you can sell deeds on, already people who have bought countries have been approached with serious offers. Ah you can showoff and say - look at this site, I own that I do!

Why don't you just do a big sale on Ebay and get rid of the countries in one big push?

Tempting as this is, the whole basis of the site works that people can see how much countries are worth, how much they are selling for, and can get involved. This means people come back to the site as they want to see how the Auctions are going. And to click on the countries to see who has won and what the content of the site is. This ensures repeat visits. Damn we are clever - oh and with our hilarious sense of humour people just keep coming back and back and gone, no then back, then forget about it, then remmeber then, back, and ......back.....etc - see how funny we are!

Are you worried about Copy-Cats?

It's the internet and things are very easily copied, this is a great idea, and I am sure people will want to become country sellers. But BuytheMap is the first site to do this, has the Kudos, Traffic, and me to back it all up. BuytheMap.com is going to be setting the pace...plus referring to the previou answer we are hilarious.

Why do you keep saying 'We' are there loads of you?

By saying we will get bck to you, we are funny etc, it makes it sound like this team is run by a whole team of monkeys. Yes the site has developers, marketers, designers, a cute secretary, and a cleaner called Mary. She cleans the keys on 'our' keyboards! Ok the truth its just me Frenchie and my imaginary friends. I have no website experience and Im just making it up as I go along - are you now more impressed.

Why are you doing this / Who are you?

Like most people my age in the U.K. coming out of University I have student debts circa 15k to pay back! In fact it's so much I'm not even sure what the amount is anymore. Yeah sure I had a good time, and I'm not moaning I'm just looking at a way of paying this back. I am also looking to get on the property ladder and need all the help I can get with a deposit. So as I seek to buy my own little piece of the world, in a trivial way I'm selling the rest of the world to everyone else - seems quite fair. I'm 24, I live in Birmingham in the U.K. after finishing uni I was a camp counselor in the USA, I then did a ski season in France, a summer in Greece, and another ski season where I met my girlfriend Laura. (she may become a bit of a theme in this whole saga - the long suffering girlfriend!). Anyway I hope that speil made you like me more and give me some of your hard earned cash!

So was is a sudden Light bulb above the head - how did you come up with it?

I'm not going to lie on this one, I've been racking my brains for months for a good idea, and zilch, nothing, nada. Then like probably everyone else I saw the story of the milliondollarhomepage and was inspired. However by then there were hundreds of imitations, it's all about coming up with something fresh, and when I finally did have a light bulb about this I got very excited, it could become really fun. Fundamentally with something like pixel pages it's all about size and positioning on the screen, but with BuytheMap its more about Kudos. If you can get a great country and an attractive link people will want to click and check it out! Plus selling the world makes me feel like a supervillain! Uh aha aha ha - thats a villainous laugh, not a cough.

What can I do with a country?

Well firstly I think it will be fun, secondly I think it would be quite cool to say 'hey you know about that really popular website - I own the U.K.' or 'I bought the Ukraine - pronounced myself king, setup a site for members and created my own little society!' Also the site will be guaranteed for 2 years initially at which point deeds will have to be renewed. Potentially this site will be seen by millions of people for many years and you could become part of the next chapter of Internet history, and get loads of traffic and business because of it. You may even think giving someone a country on this site will make a great present, I know I think it would be cool if someone handed me deeds to a country. And I guess for shrewd people out there it could make a great little investment, if you can get in early and get ownership of a popular country you could sell on the deed for profit! SO while some people may think Bulgaria is the next big thing I think it could be BuytheMap!
